My Favorite Quote From the First Day of Kindergarton

August 30, 2007

Yesterday when Forrest came home from school. I asked him how it went for the first day of Kindergarten.A lot of his comments involved I did such and such all by myself. I then asked him if he learned anything important on his first day of school. Our conversation went a little like this.

Forrest: Mom do you know who the boss is in Kindergarten. (Speaking very seriously)
Me: No, who?
Forrest: The man in the big office.
Me: You mean the Principal?
Forrest: Yes, the Principal. If we have a problem and we can't solve it in class we have to go see the boss and have a little talk with him.

I don't known if I should be concerned that talking with the principal was the most important thing Forrest felt he learned at kindergarten. Hopefully he doesn't do something just so he can go talk with the boss, I mean Principal

The First Day of Kindergarton

August 29, 2007

Today was the first day of kindergarten for Forrest. There was a lot of crying, hugging, midnight wakings wondering if we slept through it all, butterflies in the tummies and hand wringing. Luckily Forrest was cool, calm and collected. He kept reassuring me that everything would be okay. Once he got off the bus and back home I calmed down. Thankfully I don't have to go through this with Eliza for another 3 years. I don't think I could handle another day like today for a long time. Doesn't he look so handsome and grown up.
Last week I was looking through my pictures and I stumbled onto this.
I remember looking at him and thinking he was so grown up and ready to start preschool. I guess this little guy is growing up on me faster than I ever dreamed it could happen.

I am Losing My Mind

August 29, 2007

Last night as Greg and I were getting ready for bed Greg was asking if I was running in the morning. I told him yes so Greg set his alarm for 5:00 am because he needed to go to work by 6:00 am. I figured Greg could wake me up as he was leaving to go to work. As I was trying to fall asleep I started to think about my day and I hoped that Forrest would not wake up too early. That is when it hit me that I couldn't go running because Greg would be gone before I even left to go running. I don't know when I would have figured it out in the morning. Hopefully before I left both kids home alone, but who knows with my mind going like this I would have probably been halfway through my run before I would have realized that I had left the kids home alone.

Operation Binky Removal

August 28, 2007

When Eliza turned 2 years old I was going to yank the binky. As her birthday got closer and closer I began to waffle. She is very attached to her binky. When she is really upset only binky and platypus can calm her down.
She has it with her when she wakes up until she goes to bed. If binky is not with her at critical times during the day she is one unhappy camper. When we leave the house binky and platypus are not allowed to go with us. She will gently kiss both of them goodbye and lay them down where she can find them when she returns from her outing. Her morning ritual involves sprawling on the couch clutching Mr. Platypus, sucking on her binky while watching Curious George. Once George is over we have breakfast. This is when I begin a game I like to call hide the binky. Unfortunately I always lose She always manages to find a new one. I know she is hiding them throughout the house just for these occasions. I, however, continue to try. I know taking the binky away will involve at least of month of sleepless nights and horrible days. My excuses for not having taken away the binky yet is that Forrest is starting school soon and I don't want his schedule interrupted (even though he can sleep through her screaming hysterically in the same room as him), my next excuse is the holidays are coming and we have a two big trips that having a binky will be a welcome relief so of course I don't want to mess with her soothing mechanism until we are home from all of our trips. My new date for operation binky removal is January 2008, but as you have seen by my other child, you all know how good I am at getting my children to stop sucking on things.

Indexing

August 26, 2007

A couple of weeks ago I was reading this article from the Ensign and really felt inspired to try my hand at it. Last Sunday I sat down and got to work. I first read all the tutorials. I really felt like Lesson 3 & 4 were the most helpful. Lesson 3 talks about the program you will be using and Lesson 4 talks about how to index. Reading through all of these tutorials took about 45 minutes and then I downloaded my first batch. It only took me about 30 minutes to complete. I waited until later in the week and then went back and checked my work. After I was sure that everything was done to the best of my abilities I submitted my work. The total time for the whole batch was about 45 minutes. I really liked doing it because I felt like I was doing a little bit of genealogy. I have always tried to do some genealogy, but I have found of late I really don't have the time to sit down and really focus on doing my family history. With this program, however, I feel like I am doing my part. Hopefully as I get older I will be able to get back into doing our Family History, but until that time Indexing seems to be a great way to continue the work.

Look What I did

August 23, 2007

One of my sister-in-laws has this really cool thing called a Backpack Station. Every time I go over there I stand and admire it while trying to figure out if I could do the same thing in my house., Unfortunately we don't have a good location like she does, but I did want to take a little of what she has done and incorporate it in to my own home. I found this board a couple of weeks ago and thought that it would be a good place for Forrest to hang his backpack and coat on everyday when he comes home from school. Yesterday I decided it was time to get this project taken care of. I removed all the hooks, sanded it down and then repainted it in a color that would match Forrest room. I then called Greg and asked when he would be home. Now that I had it all done I wanted it hung up immediately. Greg gave me the disappointing news that he wouldn't be home for another hour. I tried having Forrest hold it up so I could see how it looked, but he wasn't very cooperative. After a couple of minutes of internal arguments I finally decided to hang it all by myself. I figured that if my sister-in-law can hand a ceiling fan by herself I could easily hang this board. I am proud to say that I did it. I even used some of Greg's power tools. I don't know about you but I have a great feeling of accomplishment for doing this entire project all by myself.

Bath Time

August 20, 2007

When I told Forrest that it was time to take a bath how long was it until he actually took a bath?

A. Immediately. You know my kids they always do what I say.
B. Never. Once Forrest started having a tantrum I told him fine he could stink for the rest of the day for all I care.
C. An hour and a half, after much whining and complaining that he didn't want to take a bath.

If you chose C you are correct. I have been told by numerous people that stubbornness is actually good a good thing, but as of right now I am really getting tired of it.

A Another Fun Summer Day

August 18, 2007

One of my friends has been talking about going to the Davis County Fair. She takes her little girl every year and they love it. I planned on going to the Fair on Thursday, but after a long hot day at Lagoon I changed my mind and went Friday instead. On Friday morning I got the kids up and ready and we headed to the fair. It was a great day. We manage to hit everything just right. When we first got to the Fair we headed over to the free pony ride. On the way there we stopped and looked at the bunnies and the chickens. We were lucky enough to have one of the workers get out one of the chickens so the kids could pet it. We then headed over to the pony ride. Soon after we arrived the masses started arriving. The line seemed to go on forever. We were able to ride the ponies on their second time around. Eliza and Forrest loved it. Eliza wouldn't let me hold on to her because she wanted to do it all by herself and Forrest was very happy that he was riding on the biggest pony there. After the pony ride we headed over to the science tent and then to the fun zone. The kids had a blast. Some of the kids favorite things to do was ride a little car through a maze of hay bales, play in the bubbles, make a track to roll marbles down on, and use a water pump to make duckies float down the river.
After these areas started to get too busy we headed over to the petting zoo. Eliza was in seventh heaven. She loves animals and was so excited that she could walk around and pet all the animals that she like. Forrest loved the baby pigs and really thought their tails were cool.

After the Fair we headed over the Wendy's for lunch with my mom, sister and her two kids. Once lunch was over we went to the movies. Amazingly enough the kids did really well. Towards the end Forrest wanted something to drink, but wouldn't leave to get a drink from the water fountain. I finally had mom go and get him a drink. As mom was coming back in she dropped the drink and had to go back and get a new one. The drink worked out really well. For the last 20 minutes of the show the two youngest of our group would wander our row of seats and come back for a sip of root beer and then go wondering again. This seemed to keep them pretty entertained until the end of the movie. Once the movie was over we loaded everyone up and managed to get home before the torrential down pour. I came home completely exhausted, but the kids seem to get their second wind. As I lay on the living room floor waiting for Greg they ran circles around me and occasional used me as a jump or launching pad. I was very happy to see Greg walk in the door. Too bad he was just as tired as I was, but luckily he makes for a better launching pad then me.

Lagoon

August 16, 2007,

Yesterday we headed out to Lagoon. Greg gets tickets through his work and we always try to wait until August to use them. It seems it is less crowded in August. We got to Lagoon about 4:00 and immediately started to sweat. Luckily we only had to suffer for a couple of hours before a nice breeze came in and everything started to cool down. The lines were relatively short. Most rides we would get off and then get right back on. Forrest had several rides that he would ride over and over again. One of those was the Tidel wave. I hate the tidal wave so I took this time to do a little people watching. I think it is pretty funny to see how people dress when they go to an amusement park. For the most part people were dressed like me, in something cool and comfortable. On the other hand some people were dressed to impress. Most notable were three girls that were walking around very fashionably dressed with high hill shoes on. I can't imagine had bad their feet must be hurting this morning. Other people seemed to take the heat as an excuse to wear as little clothing as possible even though it would have been advisable to cover up a little more of their flesh. Unfortunately for us we didn't see pinkie. That would have really made my day. Finally at 10:00 we decided to call it a day, well actually all of the rides were shutting down so we had to go home. Forrest pouted the entire way home. He was extremely upset that we couldn't stay longer even though we told them all the rides were closing down. This morning when I checked on him he was laying on his floor still pouting because we had to leave. Boy can he hold a grudge. Luckily for him we got three more tickets to Lagoon and will be heading back in October. Hopefully by then it will be cooler.

Stain Remover

August 13, 2007

I don't know if this has ever happened to you, but it seems to happen to me all the time. I will be getting dressed and will put on a freshly laundered shirt and notice spots on the shirt where somehow I have gotten grease on the shirt and then washed it. The stains are now set in and a perfectly good shirt is ruined. The last time it happened I was pretty upset. I had only worn the shirt a handful of times and now I was going to have to DI it. I had read somewhere that dish soap is great at getting out ring around the collar because all that really is is grease. I have used this method on Greg's shirts several times with great results. I decided to try it with my shirt. I took the shirt and rubbed dish soap directly into the stain and then soaked it in warm water for about 1/2 hour. I then washed it. I was amazed it work. The shirt looks good as new. I have also heard that this works if you get make-up on our shirt too.

Thanks Heavens for Naps

August 7, 2007

Today is one of those days that you are counting down the hours until you can put your little one back to bed. Eliza has been on a roll today. For the past couple of days she has had a very big ulcer in her mouth. This has caused quite a bit of pain with eating, drinking and well just sitting around in general. Eliza will be sitting on the couch and will start crying for no reason. At first I kept blaming poor Forrest for all manor of things he could of done to his sister, but I soon realized that nothing was wrong except she just wanted to complain. After numerous attempts at trying to keep her happy I threw both kids in the bath. Eliza had a great time completely soaking both bathroom rugs. When it was time to wash her hair I went to get the shampoo bottle from Forrest bathroom and discovered that he had used a practically new bottle of baby shampoo to make bubbles. We were completely out of shampoo so I had use some of my shampoo. Once she was washed up I got her out and proceed to grease her up. This is one of her least favorite things so as soon as she became to slippery to hold onto properly she made an escape. I immediately jumped up to get her only to find her peeing in the middle of the hallway. Once both kids were dressed I took Forrest over to a friends to play. Eliza went crazy. She didn't want Forrest to leave her. For the next twenty minutes I had to deal with her temper tantrum. After she had finally wound down I made her some lunch. Because she has this canker sore in her mouth she needs to drink from a cup. While I was making her lunch I gave her a cup of milk and some pears. I soon hear the pears being tossed into the milk. As I am walking over to take the milk away she pours all of the milk into the little bowl that held the pears. By this time I am starting to sprint to get to her, but I was too late as she takes the little bowl of milk and pours it all over her highchair tray. Luckily none of it got on the floor. I clean her and the tray up and start lunch all over again. Eliza is in fine form. She throws macaroni and cheese all over the kitchen, family room and me before she is finished. Soon Greg came home for lunch and things seemed to be getting better. Sure she was climbing onto the counter to play with knives again, but at least Greg was watching her. Before Greg left I ran upstairs to get something for him. When I couldn't find it I had Greg come up and help me look. Greg was only upstairs for about 3 minutes when we headed back down. When I was about halfway down the stairs I noticed this.
There were three more spots on the wood floor where she had done the exact same thing. This is when Greg made a hasty escape while I tried to clean up the mess. Luckily for Eliza it was her nap time. I don't think she would have survived another minute if I wasn't able to put her down for a nap. Greg made a funny observation while he was home. He was looking at a picture of us back when Forrest was about a year old and he said how young we looked back then. We no longer look like young 20 somethings. We now look like we are well into our 30's with several kids that are determine to give us as many gray hairs and wrinkles as the can before they finally move out.

Another slithery visitor

August 5, 2007

Several years ago as I was walking down into the basement I noticed what appeared to be a rope across the bottom of our stairs. As I got closer I realized it was a snake. I came up screaming at Greg to go and get it. Greg asks if there was anyway that we could call my dad or my brother. That was when I realized that Greg is scared of snakes. He quickly assured me he wasn't scared he just hated them with a passion. When Greg realized I was serious about him getting the snake he had me go and get a pillowcase. Greg carefully went down the stairs and grabbed the snake. He then came running up the stairs juggling the pillowcase back and forth trying to keep the snake in the pillowcase. I threw open the door and Greg ran out into the middle of the driveway and threw the pillowcase down. He stood there and watched to make sure the snake was slithering away when he realized he was standing in the middle of our driveway in his garments. He made a beeline back into the house with me laughing hysterically.

Since that fateful day I have seen snakes in our yard on numerous occasions. For the most part I try to ignore them. Most of the time I don't even know they are there until I almost step on them. That really gets my heart pounding. Up until yesterday I hadn't seen a snake for at least a year. That was of course until Greg called Forrest out into the garage. Somehow another snake had gotten in. Luckily for my peace of mind Greg got it before it got into our house. Greg overcame his extreme hatred of snakes fueled by his extreme fear of my anger and picked up the snake. He even held onto it long enough for Forrest to come out and pet it. Forrest now thinks snakes are really cool and it is only a matter of a time before he is heading down to the river to catch a snake to bring home as a pet.

My Baby is Not a Baby Anymore

August 4, 2007

Two years ago today I was laying in the hospital bed coming to the realization that in about 30 minutes I was going to voluntarily allow the doctor to cut me open. Greg kept trying to reassure me that this was way better than suffering through hours and hours of hard labor, but I knew better than that it was easier on his nerves. They took me into the operating room and about 10 minutes later Eliza was born. I was soon swamped with an overwhelming fear that something would go wrong. I made Greg stay with her every step of the way and kept telling him to watch her and make sure that nothing would go wrong. Luckily for us things were vastly different then the last time we had a baby. I was sewn up and then wheeled into the recovery room. Greg and Eliza soon joined me. After a short hospital stay we headed home and started to adjust to a life with two children. Eliza was a more difficult baby than Forrest, but we were so happy to finally have her here after years of trying to add her to our little family that most things didn't seem that bad.

It seems very unreal to me that 2 years have passed since that eventful day. Eliza brings joy to our life and makes us realize how blessed we are to have two sweet spirits in our home. Eliza is a go getter. If she sees something she wants she will go after it full steam ahead. We call her our little monkey because she climbs everything in sight. She will pull herself up by her arms to see what is on the counter and if she sees anything she wants she will use a stool or climb up a chair to get it. Childproofing our house has taken on a whole new meaning. Eliza looks up to her older brother and is constantly trying to do everything he does. She is very sweet and will give him hugs and kissed whenever he feels bad. The last two years have been a joyful adventure and I can't wait to see what happens next. Of course if she climbs out of her crib again, or I find her standing on the counter waving knives above her head I just might have to tie her to a chair until she is 18.

The Best Part of Summer

August 3, 2007
Eating a Fudge Bar in your underwear, I mean diaper.

I am not a baker

August 3, 2007

I am a cook. I can whip up a meal that tastes better than any meal you can get in a restaurant, but I can't bake. What I mean by this is cookies, cakes, pies are beyond my ability. I can make cookies and for the most part they turn out okay, but it seems that about every third time I make them they don't turn out. My cakes are always out of box and my frosting is always out of a can. One year while I was teaching I made some frosting for a activity my students were doing. Unfortunately the frosting did not turn out very well. I can still hear the students laughing as they looked at my pathetic attempt at making frosting. I have attempted to make a pie once and quickly decided that it was just better to let some one else do it from now on. But today I am making a cake (from a box of course) but for the frosting I am going to attempt to make it by hand. Tomorrow is my little girls birthday. She is turning 2 and I feel that I should really make an effort to make something nice. It has nothing to do with the fact that I have a sister and sister-in-law who make amazing homemade frosting that tastes good on anything including Broiled Prune Cake. So tomorrow as we are sitting around celebrating Eliza's birthday please be polite and try my cake and try to refrain from mentioning my pathetic attempts at frosting.

Cleaning your microwave

August 2, 2007

I don't know about you, but I hate to clean the microwave. It seems like right after you clean it someone will heat up a plate of spaghetti and forget to cover it. By the time you notice the spaghetti sauce is stuck like glue. To get this off I have found that if you boil 1 cup of water for three minutes everything will just wipe clean. Now cleaning the microwave is fast and well not fun, but at least doable.
